If you’re at the point in your career where you want to know how to charge more for your photography services, you’re not alone. It’s a question many newer photographers ask themselves. Unfortunately, most of these new photographers don’t answer their own question – instead, they simply add $500 to their prices and then wonder why no one is booking with them.
If you want to charge more for your photography then you need to prove to your clients why you’re more valuable to them now than before. Ideally. this means that you need to improve your skills! Invest in some continuing education or photography workshops for professional photographers. If your skills are already top-notch then you have to consider your customers experience; would a re-branding and re-design of your website help them navigate your information? Are you wanting to open a studio space or an ordering location? Would this justify your desire to charge more?
When it comes to service and pricing changes, I personally like to keep things simple. I don’t order fancy shmancy catalogues with my pricing in it because I know that it will change. I use as little paper as I can and print out concise little summary sheets. Not only is this better for the environment and create less waste when you change prices but it also keeps your overhead costs low (part of running a successful business).
Some people choose to change their prices on a yearly basis but I prefer changing them when my skills and product dictate a change. As I attend workshops and continue perfecting my skills I often sit back and reflect on the value of what I am producing. A small price increase a few times a year is much more welcomed by your fanbase than 1 massive increase yearly. Most clients have a case of sticker shock when they see what the cost of photography is, no need to twist the knife anymore.
At the end of the day, remember this: the wedding photography market is incredibly competitive and although raising your prices is a normal part of any business, in today’s market you better be able to justify why.
