While there was still some snow on the ground, and let’s face it – we’re all happy that it’s finally melting, I had a chance to capture these Nathan Phillips Square engagement photos with Natalie and Jamie. Being a Toronto wedding photographer, you’d think that taking photos at a monumentally popular place like Nathan Phillips square would happen often, but I was thrilled that this was my first time – especially with the skating!
When I first met these two lovebirds, I think they were more charmed with my cat, Marv, than me. Luckily I hold a pretty strong second to Marv’s personality and the three of us hit it off right away. After getting to know them a little more, I learned that they would love to incorporate ice-skating into their engagement photos. Natalie initially suggested a cute little rink near their home, but why skate in a small rink when you can go to Nathan Phillips Square?
We were fortunate that it was a mild day outside; cold enough to become beautifully apple-cheeked but warm enough to not have to wear a full snow jacket. I’m still in love with Natalie’s choice of outfit – everything about it screams “Canada!”. Jamie is an avid skater while Natalie is still gaining comfort; luckily Jamie was there to hold her hand as they skated round and round. A quick stop for a coffee before heading next door for a few more engagement photos at Osgoode Hall. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Osgoode Hall – I forgot how much I love it! The cobblestone walkway, strong lines, and arches are simply breathtaking.
Before wrapping up the session, I suggest some night photos – there was one shot in particular that I had in mind. While the lovebirds skated to stay warm, we patiently waited for the sun to set and the lights to turn on, lighting up the rink from below the arches. I’m betting that a lot of the other skaters were wondering just what the heck was going on – but it was worth it. The final shot of the night – a nighttime engagement photo in downtown Toronto – is now one of my new favorite images! I think I may just have to hang this one on my own wall.
Congratulations to both of you; I had such a fantastic time working with you and getting to know you better throughout the session. By the time your wedding day gets here, it will be like hanging out with good friends! Cheers!!
